On your full day at Snow Lodge, choose your own adventure! Those wishing to spend the day at the lodge can borrow a book from the Yellowstone lending library, play a game or do a puzzle, or take advantage of free and unlimited ice skating. Lone Star erupts roughly every 3 hours, and although we missed the eruption, we were delighted by groomed ski trails, wildlife sightings, and enchanting views of Spring Creek. We enjoyed stellar interpretation from our snowcoach driver while exploring this geyser basin, which includes every type of thermal feature in Yellowstone National Park hot springs, geysers, mud pots, and fumaroles.
Depending on what time you departed, your snowcoach will arrive back in Gardiner either around lunchtime or in the early evening. Check our road status map before you leave. Park partners and concessioners offer a variety of guided trips throughout the park during the winter months. Authorized businesses also offer guided tours for a variety of activities.
Most facilities are closed during winter. Check winter operating hours for visitor centers, stores, restaurants, campgrounds, lodges, and warming huts. Make reservations as far in advance as possible. Lodging is also available in nearby communities. The only campground in the park open year-round is in Mammoth Hot Springs, located 5 miles south of the park's North Entrance.
Sub-zero temperatures are common, especially at night and at higher elevations. Check the current weather conditions, pack proper clothing and equipment , and review winter safety tips! Animals always have the right of way. Expect to encounter bison and other wildlife on park roads. Slow down or pull over until they pass or move off the road.
People have been severely injured or killed by breaking through the thin ground in thermal basins or falling into hot springs. Snow-packed boardwalks can be slippery, especially near thermal areas. A newly added Map Room is a lovely public space off the hotel lobby where guests can relax and order a beverage from the coffee bar. There are 85 sites and reservations are NOT accepted. All sites are first-come, first-served. Mammoth Hotel Dining Room is a full-service restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is the only 4-star certified green restaurant in the National Parks. The lodge was built in Firehole Lounge offers cocktails, local craft beers, wine, and small plates.
Guests are welcome to gather in front of the fireplace or just have a seat and relax. Expect bitter cold temperatures and much snow. With the right gear and proper preparations, though, the temperature will be an afterthought. Cell service in and around Yellowstone can be spotty in some parts Verizon subscribers seem to have the best coverage and downright non-existent in other parts. Also, there are no televisions, radios, or Wi-Fi at the hotels so as to provide guests the most authentic wilderness experience.
